Labeling Workshop – Feb 5, 2011

The Nova StudioIt’s just been finalized that I will be doing a Labeling Workshop at The Nova Studio in Point Richmond, California on February 5, 2011.  Actually, two sessions are planned (one for the morning and one for the afternoon), depending on how many people sign up.

The 4-hour class will cover the following:

  • What nearly ALL products require on the label, no matter what they are (cosmetic, soap, household, etc.)
  • Determining if your product is a cosmetic, soap, drug, “consumer commodity” or something else
  • The different options for labeling soap (For example, must you use the INCI names?)
  • How to determine the right size and placement for the required information
  • Ingredient listings (there actually are some options/choices you’ll have to make)
  • Newly formatted hands-on workshop to review or design your product labels

It is suggested that all attendees bring 3 products (labeled or unlabeled).  During the course of the workshop we’ll go over everything that’s needed to determine what (if anything) is needed to make them fully compliant with current regulations.  A copy of my book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow The Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English is also required for the class.

With potential legislation in the works that could affect all of us making handcrafted small-batch soaps and cosmetics, it behooves us all to take a pro-active stance on ensuring that we (as individuals and as an industry) strive to follow the current regulations.  A key argument against added regulation is that we ARE following the existing regulations and therefore don’t need additional rules and enforcement because we are already successfully policing ourselves.

Spread the word about correct labeling.  Talk to fellow soapmakers.  Attend a class on labeling your product.  Get the book.  Email me if you need help!

  1. I’m so excited to be hosting this Labeling Class at The Nova Studio for the second time! The information you provide in this workshop is helpful to anyone who plans on making their products for sale. While the book may be enough for some people, many of us have questions we would like to ask someone in person and it’s so helpful to have you explain things as you walk us through the key areas of the book.

I love that you’ve made changes to make the workshop more “hands-on” – as people do tend to learn better while they are doing. Allowing the students to bring 3 of their own products to be evaluated right in the class is a wonderful idea. If we are going to self-regulate, as you suggest, we have to be doing it correctly.

I’m certain this workshop will sell-out, just knowing how many people come to my studio to make products not only for themselves & their families, but also who want to sell their amazing handcrafted soap & toiletries. Thank you for agreeing to come all the way back to The Nova Studio for this extremely valuable business workshop.
